In 2011, through a record commitment of EUR 1.1bn, the EIF catalysed a total of 49 new venture and growth funds, with overall target fund sizes amounting to EUR 6bn.
The EIF acts as a fund of funds. It is up to the funds in which the EIF has a stake to decide whether or not to invest in particular SMEs and they are their sole point of contact. The EIF-supported funds provide small businesses with equity but also pragmatic help, advice and know-how.
