The EIB has been lending in the Republic of South Africa since its transition to a democratic government in 1994. Following the conclusion of the EU-South Africa Trade, Cooperation and Development Agreement, the EIB has been entrusted with successive lending mandates for a total lending volume of EUR 2.4 billion. As at the end of 2009, the EIB had extended funding to 38 projects for a total of EUR 2 billion.
The current mandate covers the period 2007 to 2013 for up to EUR 900 million from the EIB’s own resources, for both public and private sector operations.
