The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Principality of Monaco will be hosting the 6th FEMIP Conference on "Sustainable Water Financing and Climate Change in the Mediterranean" on 10 and 11 May 2009 in Monaco. This event will be held under the high patronage and in the presence of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince.
Who should attend?
The one-day conference will bring together government officials as well as representatives of water sector, international financing institutions and media organisations.
The issue
The 6th FEMIP Conference offers the occasion to follow up on the 5th World Water Forum held in Istanbul from 16 to 22 March 2009 as well as on the Ministerial Conference on Water held in Amman on 22 December 2008 and thus to contribute to the further development of the Mediterranean Water Strategy in the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean.
The conference will address the theme of sustainable water financing, examine the role of pricing in order to attract investments and draw lessons for the Mediterranean region. It will analyse water scarcity and climate change, explore possible solutions to existing challenges in the region and envisage a framework for improving water efficiency.
Background
Access to clean water resources is a major challenge for Mediterranean countries. Water management and sanitation-related projects help to protect and safeguard public health and the natural environment. Such investments are essential to promoting regional development and economic and social cohesion. Along these guidelines and under the umbrella of the EIB water sector lending policy, water has become one of the hallmarks in the Mediterranean region.

Format
The conference will be interactive. After the opening session, which will provide a broad outline of the topics to be discussed, each session will be introduced by an expert in the field, and a panel will then comment briefly on the subject before opening the floor to discussion with conference participants.
The conference languages will be English and French with simultaneous interpretation available throughout all sessions.
