In parallel with its lending activity in the education sector, the Bank has developed the EIB-Universities Research Action to channel its institutional support to higher education and academic research.
This Action is designed to respond in a consistent way to requests from European universities for financial assistance in particular but also for Research Action. It mainly consists of the three programmes: EIBURS, STARBEI and EIB University Networks.

During this year’s European Regional Science Association congress, the word’s largest regional science congress, the annual EIB-ERSA Prize for regional science went to Professor Piet Rietveld. The theme of the 51st ERSA congress, which took place in Barcelona between 30th August and 3rd September, was “New challenges for European regions and urban areas in a globalised world”.

The EIB University Research Sponsorship (EIBURS) programme
The EIBURS programme provides grants to EU university research centres working on certain research topics and themes of major interest to the Bank, selected by the EIB Universities Committee.
